Weekend of 1/29

It looks like little or no outside riding this weekend.

While I miss riding very much, we plan to go to a few forest preserves and so crosscountry skiing. Yesterday we went to Ryerson and saw three deer, and the snow was just thick enough and very decent to glide on.

1/23/11 Ride Cancelled - Roads Too Slick

We decided to cancel the ride scheduled for today. It does not seem like a safe day to be out on the roads with all the snow still sticking. Of course the temperature that still has not made it into the teens could possibly have had a bit of an influence on our decision as well.

Sunday ride from The Other Brother to Fort Sheridan and back

Felix, Pierre and I, together with two friends from Turin, Mike and Kevin, left The Other Brother (of Brothers K) at Grove and Sherman in Evanston shortly after 9:00 AM. Destination: Fort Sheridan. Conspicuously absent was another member of the 20+ MPH group, who (allegedly) was doing a far more strenuous workout somewhere else indoors.

We went at a moderate pace, the temperature was perhaps in the low or middle teens, with very little wind, and I felt fine, others seemed comfortable also. Once we got inside Fort Sheridan, some of us did a bit sprinting for fun. We then went for a brief break at Starbucks right outside Fort Sheridan.

It was a good ride, considering it was the middle of January. The roads were quite clean and dry, with snow by the sides of the roads. It was amazing that I was able to go crosscountry skiing with my son on the same day in the afternoon, and then ice-skating on a pond after dinner. Should have tried swimming and running, too, just to be complete.

Panera to Panera Ride - 4 riders x 45 miles

We have fallen into a winter routine of riding from Panera Bread in Wilmette to Panera Bread in Lake Bluff. On today's ride, a member of the group who shall remain unidentified suggested that the Skokie Valley Trail was clear of ice in all but a couple of spots. However, once we started on the bike path, it was not long until we hit our first patch of frost sticking to the asphalt. After having to slow down for patches of frost a dozen times, it was wisely suggested that we exit the bike path. From there on out it was a nice ride. And everyone remained upright on their bikes.

Ride on 1/9/2011 - 10:00 at Panera

We're planning a 40-45 mile ride on Sunday (1/9/2011). We'll probably ride up to Lake Bluff and back. Due to the low early morning temperature, we're not starting until 10:00 am. Meeting at Panera Bread in Wilmette.
