June 5th Ride Recap

It started as a much cooler day than yesterday and stayed like that for the entire ride. 6 of us took the usual route to Panera in Lake Bluff. The usual pace line on the Skokie Valley Bicycle Path. Nice snack and conversation at Panera Bread. Brisk pace line back on the path. Made it home earlier than usual (I hope the wives appreciated it).

  1. Well...no rest for the wicked. I went back to the Green Bay Trail at Fort Sheridan with my wife and son. They were on bikes and I was on my inline skates, we went north to the end of the trail (Great Lakes). Picked up the speed a bit on the way back.

I always tried to be sensitive to cyclists on the trail when I am speed skating, because I take up both lanes if I am going for real, and it could seem very selfish. But it was a nice run, with smiling cyclists and joggers everywhere we went.

  2. I rode the Udder Century today. It was extremely well organized, well stocked rest stops, tons of helpful volunteers, and great SAG support. It was a pleasure to ride on such lightly traveled roads. The only two negative aspects of the ride were: 1) it is mostly though farming country, so not particularly scenic (unless you really get a kick out of seeing cows); and 2) the hilliest portion of the course is the last 15 miles -- for anyone used to real hills, probably no big deal, but for a rider like myself that has been riding on really flat terrain, it was a tough way to finish the ride as the day warmed up and we were riding into the wind.

We went out at a fast speed for the first 50 miles, well ahead of the pace required for the Sub 5 Hour Century. However we paid dearly for our 24-26 mph pace during much of the first 30 miles and really burned ourselves out. As the day started to warm up, the 75 mile option became ever more appealing. Given how worn out we were by the finish, absolutely no regrets about only doing the 75 mile route.

  4. Rotating paceline would be better. We can start practicing on the bike path.
